The era of tall ships comes to life at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s Annual Sea Festival with the return of Spirit of Dana Point – an 18th century 118-foot privateer. This fun-filled day of dockside and onboard activities features performers in period costume, a Remotely Operated Vehicle, hardhat diving demonstrations, museum tours, crafts, touch tank, storytelling and more.
A little about the Spirit of Dana Point: Built from Smithsonian plans, the Institute’s 118-foot historic tallship Spirit of Dana Point is a full size replica of a Baltimore clipper schooner, a hull design that developed over several hundred years of Dutch and English history and culminated around the 1760s in and around the waters off Virginia.
Aboard the Spirit of Dana Point, one is reminded of a young American colony in a new land that dreamed of independence and built some of the fastest and best sailing ships in the world. These ships were the result of ingenuity, independence and a strong desire to accomplish something great.
A young colony in a new land dreamed of independence and built some of the fastest and best sailing ships in the world. These ships were the result of ingenuity, independence and a strong desire to accomplish something. It was Dennis Holland's life dream to build an accurate replica from the period when America fought for independence and world recognition. Armed with talent, determination, little money and plans he purchased from the Smithsonian Institute he laid the keel in his yard on May 2, 1970. Thirteen years later this fast privateer was launched and 210 years in the future her hull again sails the ocean. Everywhere you look on board you see the craftsmanship and pride of early America.
